National County Government Week

April 22 - 28, 2007

Protecting the Environment

A walk among wildflowers and tours of the new energy-efficient Youth Services Center highlight San Mateo County's celebration of National County Government Week, April 22-28.

The County will also show off part of the fleet of hybrid vehicles, announce a major expansion of an innovative recycling program and restore parkland. The theme for National County Government Week - "Protecting the Environment" - is natural for San Mateo County.

"National County Government Week is an opportunity for us to open the doors of county government to highlight our innovation, leadership and success in protecting our beautiful county," said Rose Jacobs Gibson, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

"Families that may need assistance or anyone who has a question may be unaware of the multitude of services available to them," Jacobs Gibson said. "That is why it is imperative that County residents know who we are and what we do and how we are leaders in environmental stewardship." By celebrating National County Government Week, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors hopes to raise public awareness and understanding about the role and responsibility of the county.

The five-member Board of Supervisors oversees an annual budget of about $1.6 billion. The County's 5,500 employees perform a wide variety of services, from helping those in need to law enforcement to finding new ways to save energy and recycle.

National County Government Week coincides with many Earth Day celebrations.
